VISIT OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANADA
The Most Rev. Fred Hiltz, the Archbishop of Canada, visited the partner diocese of Bujumbura 12–16th February 2009.
Archbishop Hiltz was accompanied by Cheryl Curtis, executive director of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) that has been supporting development projects in Bujumbura and Gitega dioceses. Youth representatives were also part of the delegation and were able to spend an extended time visiting projects and connecting with youth.

Archbishop Hiltz, in a meeting with the Most Rev. Bernard Ntahoturi, expressed appreciation for the relationship with the Province. There was agreement to explore future cooperation and partnership between the two Provinces especially in the areas of peace-building and theological education.
In his sermon in Holy Trinity Cathedral, Bujumbura, Archbishop Hiltz commended the Church for its passion, vision, prayer, care and service among “those in the most urgent of needs”.
ACT INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY RELIEF
Emergency relief from ACT International enabled 1275 households in Matana diocese to receive beans and vegetable seeds. The distribution was made necessary due to heavy rains that destroyed crops in the southern part of the country.
Buye diocese was also able to distribute beans to 2000 people suffering as a result of insufficient rain in the north.
Both distributions included returnees among the beneficiaries.
MEETINGS IN NEW YORK AND ZAMBIA
Mrs. Claudette Kigeme, the coordinator of Mothers’ Union, has been in New York attending the International Anglican Women’s Network and 53rd Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She was joined for the latter by Mrs. Clavera Bigirimana, the Mothers’ Union President for Bujumbura diocese.
The meeting of the IAWN, that represents 40 million Anglican women across 165 countries, provided an opportunity for reflection on, and planning, the work of the Network as they considered the particular challenges faced by Anglican women. Those challenges include violence and trafficking, extreme poverty, gender inequality, and diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria.

Some of those challenges are part of the agenda for the UNCSW that has as its main theme “the equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including care-giving in the context of HIV/AIDS”.
Mathias Nkurunziza, coordinator of the Integrated Health Programme, has been at a NetsforLife Round Table organized by Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) to look at issues of funding and resourcing, and evaluate and plan the NetsforLife programme.
Mathias was able to report on the situation regarding malaria in Burundi and the positive impact that the NetsforLife programme has had throughout the Province through training and education regarding their use, and the distribution of mosquito nets in the dioceses.

The Province expresses gratitude to Rev. Pat and Mrs. Pam Brooks who were accompanied by Miss Joan Botterill, and Rev. William Challis, Diocesan Director of Ordinands for Guilford diocese for all they have contributed during recent visits, especially to the life and ministry of Buye and Matana dioceses.
