Visit to the UK
At the beginning of December the Archbishop, the Most Rev. Bernard Ntahoturi, chaired the first meeting of the newly formed Inter-Anglican Commission for Unity, Faith and Order. This Commission is mandated to deal with ecumenical and doctrinal issues in the life of the Anglican Communion.
The Archbishop attended the AGM of Christian Aid and was able to engage with their advocacy work on climate change.
He also participated in the Mid Africa Conference organised by CMS UK and attended the farewell service of the Bishop of Southampton, the Rt. Rev. Paul Butler, who has been appointed as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham.
Environment Week
On National Tree Day, the 12th December, the Province was supported by Christian Aid and Lambeth Palace in planting trees in parts of Gitega diocese.
A total of 5500 trees were planted around the town of Gitega and in the rural area of Bugendana. The Church worked closely with members of the local administration.
The Tree Day brought to a conclusion an Environment Week organised by the Government and UNDP that was officially opened in Bujumbura by the President of Burundi.
Clean Water
Dioceses are being enabled to respond to the need for communities to have access to clean water and to harvest water thanks to funding from Episcopal Relief and Development.
On a recent visit to Muyinga diocese beneficiaries spoke joyfully of the way their lives have been transformed and disease in their families reduced as a result of having clean water sources.
In Buye diocese plastic water tanks are being installed to harvest rain water and old water-tanks attached to some of the houses originally built by missionaries are being renovated.
Partnerships
The Province is grateful for all the support received from partners and friends during the year.
Recently new partnerships have been established - Bujumbura diocese with the diocese of Quebec and Muyinga diocese with the diocese of Qu'Appelle, both in Canada.
Schools
The Province has been pleased to welcome back Helen Stawski from Lambeth Palace.
She was able to see the progress made on Gitega primary school and the Agricultural College being built at Mwakiro.
These projects are supported by Irish Aid through CMS Ireland in partnership with Lambeth Palace.
Gender Based Violence
The annual international 16-day campaign encouraging men and women to join together in combating violence against women was opened on the 25th November in Rutana.
As part of the many activities being held nationally, Mothers' Union organised a 2-day workshop funded by UNFPA on ways of combating such violence through the restoration of family values for representatives of all the dioceses and other organisations.
2010 CELEBRATIONS
The Province looks forward to celebrating 75 years of God's blessings throughout 2010.
