Trinity Institute Conference -- 27-29 January 2010 -- New York, USA
Building an Ethical Economy: Theology and the Marketplace brought together leading theologians and economists to consider the relationship between economics and Christian belief and action.
The Archbishop, the Most Rev. Bernard Ntahoturi, preached at the opening service on the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25 emphasising the use of all resources, gifts and abilities for the common good and the transformation of the world in contrast to competition and consumerism.
Addressing the conference were Dr. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, theologian Professor Kathryn Tanner, and Cambridge professor Sir Partha Dasgupta.
Sympathy
The Province extends sympathy to the family of Canon Joy Ndayisenga, widow of the former Archbishop Samuel Ndayisenga, who died on 28th January 2010 aged 75 years, and to the diocese of Buye. She led Mothers' Union in the diocese from 1979 and was Provincial MU President from 1998 to 2005.
Sympathy is also extended to the family of Rev. Canon Mark Ruratetereza who died on 17th January at the age of 92 and to those who served with him in the diocese of Gitega.
Also to the family of David Muyemba who died on the 1st January at the age of 75, especially to Leonidas Niyongabo, his son, who works in the Provincial staff as development officer. David helped to build the Church and primary school at Kwishwi in Matana diocese.
2010 Elections In Burundi
Ongoing prayer is requested for the forthcoming elections that they will proceed peacefully and fairly at each stage.
The schedule for the elections is as follows: 21 May - Communal Councils; 28 June - Presidential; 23 July - Parliament; 28 July - Senate; 7 September - Local Councils.
A Pastoral Letter read out in parishes over Christmas encouraged all Christian people to participate peacefully, to avoid divisions, and to pray especially for politicians and those in authority.
Representatives from the churches are involved in monitoring the elections at different levels and stages.
Bethesda Project
On 19th January Muyinga diocese welcomed Steve and Lucy Mcllhenny, seen in the photo. They will be helping to establish the Bethesda Project in the diocese over the next two years.
The project involves setting up an inclusive outdoor activity and training centre where able and disabled-bodied people will be able to engage together in challenging activities in order to develop team spirit, and enhance self-esteem and appreciation of others. It is hoped that this will be a catalyst for tackling social exclusion, prejudice and misunderstanding.
The vision for the project originated from a visit made in 2007 by the Rt. Rev. Eraste Bigirimana, Bishop of Muyinga diocese, to the Kepplewray Project in the diocese of Carlisle, UK.
The Bethesda Project, though situated in Muyinga diocese, will welcome people from all the dioceses as well as from different parts of the country and region.
