ANGLICAN CHURCH OF BURUNDI- A SIXTH ARCHBISHOP HAS BEEN ELECTED

The Bishop of Bujumbura Diocese, the Rt. Revd. Eraste BIGIRIMANA, has been elected by the House of Bishops of Burundi to serve as the sixth Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church of Burundi.

The Province of the Anglican Church of Burundi is hereby pleased to announce that the House of Bishops held on 21st May 2026, elected The Rt. Revd. Eraste BIGIRIMANA, the Bishop of Bujumbura Diocese, as the 6th Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church of Burundi.

Born in 1964 in Buhumuza Province, Ruyigi Commune, Bishop Eraste BIGIRIMANA comes from an Anglican family.In the same province, he attended Muriza Primary School, before entering Buhiga teachers’ college. In 1987, he entered the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Burundi, specializing in African Languages and Literatures. He holds two degrees: one in Human Sciences/African Languages and Literature another one in Divinity (Theology) at Uganda Christian University.

In 1991, having earned his degree, Bishop Eraste BIGIRIMANA became a professor at the Catholic Seminary in Mugera, and later at Musinzira High School.

The Rt. Revd. Eraste BIGIRIMANA was consecrated as Bishop in 2005 and became the first Bishop of Muyinga Diocese,and from 2013Bishop of Bujumbura Diocese.

From September 2025 Rt. Revd. Bishop Eraste BIGIRIMANA is a coordinator of the Anglican Francophone Network (Réseau Francophone Anglican). In 2013, Bishop Eraste has been appointed to lead the Diocese of Bujumbura following changes occurred in the leadership of the Diocese.

As the Anglican Church of Burundi has been collaborating with the Government of Burundi to advance development initiatives, , Church leaders are often entrusted by responsibilities and Bishop Eraste is a member National Security Council.

He takes over from the Most Rt. Revd. Sixbert MACUMI, who has led the Province of the Anglican Church of Burundi from 2021. The installation of the new elected Archbishop and Primate of Burundi will take place in August.
